Indigenous Use: Treatment for breast cancer. Cohosh in Umatilla means breast. Black cohosh extract exerts no proliferation activity on cancer cells. Cells actually die.
Other Uses: American Indians also used black cohosh to promote menstruation and as a sedative for rheumatism.
Preparation: Make tea by covering two teaspoons of black cohosh root with two cups of water. Boil for thirty minutes. Cool and strain. Take two to three tablespoons up to six times a day.
Availability: Found in rich woods from southern Ontario to central and southeastern U.S. Common (Herbal Supplier).
