VISION GIVER

Medicine: Peyote (Lophophora williamsii)

Path: 1 Great Spirit
Directions: Above/Above
Vision: Sky power without influencing eagle spirit within
Physiology: Outer body (brain), Inner effect (transform)

Indigenous Use: Peyote has been used ceremonially by indigenous cultures in Texas and Mexico since 1000 B.C. It is a cactus whose active constituent is mescaline. Used today in the Tipi Ceremony by the Native American Church, the spirit of peyote brings healing psychologically and physically. It is, however, a narcotic hallucinogen and should be used with extreme caution.
Preparation: The most common method of use is to simply chew the buds and swallow them. They can be eaten fresh or dried. During the peyote ceremony Native Americans encourage vomiting. This is for the purging of both physical and spiritual sicknesses. It is also a common practice to fast for a day before taking peyote. A tea preparation may also be used.
Availability: Found in the deserts of southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Using Peyote is illegal except for Native American ceremonies.
